There has been strong emotions and much publicity over the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn #RoevWade. I will not white wash the truth: if you are Christian or Jewish you cannot be #prochoice but must be #prolife. Why? I will turn to the ultimate authority, the Bible.
If you read the gospel of Luke 1:26-45. It starts with “In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin betrothed to to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.” When the angel Gabriel tells Mary that she will become pregnant and bear a son she asks “How will this be since I am a virgin?” “The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month… Mary answered,”May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.”
Let’s start at the beginning. Mary says yes to the angel Gabriel. She travels to Elizabeth and Zechariah’s to help with Elizabeth’s pregnancy. She didn’t have a car to jump into and drive over there, she would have to walk. While the gospel doesn’t name the town in Judea, the village of Ein Karem is the traditional birth place of John the Baptist which is a 90 mile walk going uphill into mountains from Nazareth. The roads were dangerous in those days so most people, especially young women, did not travel alone. Mary would have had to wait for a caravan of friends or family that were going that way, so let’s say maybe two to three weeks to get with a caravan. Next walking 90 miles uphill would have taken probably close to a week with stops for meals, sleeping, taking care of any animals with them and of course children. So when Mary arrives at Elizabeth’s house she is anywhere from two to four weeks pregnant. When Mary greets Elizabeth, she is filled with the Holy Spirit and asks Mary how the mother of her Lord should visit her.
If you are a Christian you must admit that Jesus is God. The argument put forth by pro-choice people is that the embryo or fetus is not a human being until it is born. In other words the soul does not enter the body until the baby takes it’s first breath. In the above scripture passage Elizabeth, thanks to the workings of the Holy Spirit, recognizes Jesus in Mary’s womb. This brings us to the question of why would Jesus, who is God, enter an egg that has become fertilized anywhere from two to four weeks before, when his Father does not put a soul into a fetus until the moment the baby takes it’s first breath? Why would Jesus, God, leave the glories of heaven to enter a mass of cells in his mother womb when no one else does?
Next is John the Baptist’s reaction to Mary’s greeting. How many people want to push through the evil of late term abortion, even up to the moment the baby is being born, but again claiming that it is not a baby yet. With today’s modern science we know that the fetus feels pain, recognizes his mother and father’s voice and is viable outside the womb at just sixth months in the womb so that really negates that argument but let’s look at scripture again. The six to seven month fetus of John the Baptist leaps for joy recognizing Jesus inside Mary’s womb. That means that John the Baptist is cognizant of the presence of God in Mary’s womb while he is only a six or seven month fetus himself.
Lastly, for both Christians and Jews let’s look at the Old Testament of Isaiah 49:15-16. God states “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion for the child of her womb? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…” God cares about each life he has sent into the world. He will never forget anyone whether their mother decides to abort them or not. Our names, including the aborted babies, are engraved on the palms of his hands. Can someone truly go through with an abortion knowing that God already knows that baby and cares about him or her?
The argument that it’s a woman’s body is only applicable when it comes time for her to have sex and whether to use protection or not. Once that woman becomes pregnant it is the baby’s body that we are talking about and we do not have the right to take another person’s life, even if it’s inside the womb. God has a plan for that child and only he should say when he will call that person home to heaven. There are no arguments that anyone can make to support abortion, when you believe that scripture is the inspired word of God. It’s in black and white right there. Join the fight to protect the unborn and become one of God’s chosen to defend life from the moment of conception to that of natural death.
