I want to begin today by stating that I have been doubting Thomas throughout much of my journey. I constantly questioned if it was all real and what was God asking of me if he was really speaking to me. I thought things like this only happened in the bible or to saints of long ago. As I would question, I would ask The Father or Jesus to prove it somehow and they always did. As I began to accept some of what was happening to me, God brought some amazing faith-filled people into my life and many books that helped me in my journey, to accept what was happening to me, and I began to realize that I was not unique. Sadly, I have also spoken to many people who had experienced some of the things I have. God had been calling them to a deeper relationship with him and to follow his plan for their lives but when they had spoken to a religious leader, they had been told God’s not like that, he doesn’t work amazing miracles anymore or speaks directly to people. I myself was told this by a nun who was the head of the spirituality center where my local priest had sent me for spiritual direction, after telling me what was happening to me was beyond him. (To his credit, he was a fairly newly ordained priest so I didn’t blame him, and we became good friends through it all. He also became my spiritual director years later, lol).
Back to that nun. By the time my spiritual director had sent me to her because she wasn’t sure about everything that was happening to me, God was convincing me it was him, but believe me, it was after making him jump through hoops to prove it. I spoke to her about some of the things that were happening in my life and she told me that God doesn’t work miracles like that anymore. She told me that the miracles God worked today were a beautiful sunset, a flower, a child’s laugh. Yes, all of that is part of God’s creation but I can tell you, and I told her, if you think God doesn’t work extraordinary miracles today or speaks to people, you’re wrong. We are God’s children, he loves us more than we can imagine, and as Jesus said if we who are sinners know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more does our heavenly Father want to give us good gifts or that he is calling to each of us, speaking to us in the most loving way. I have learned that God is only limited by what we believe. The New Testament states that when Jesus went home to Nazareth, he was unable to work many miracles there because of their unbelief.
My advice to anyone out there searching for answers, guidance, or a miracle, don’t put limits on God. Believe that he loves you and wants to help you. He is all-powerful and all-knowing. He created everything and everything is under his control. He may not answer in the way you want but he will answer and give you a sign that he is with you. I’m not saying to believe every odd occurrence that happens to you is God. A common phrase I kept hearing is that there is no such thing as a coincidence, only God. My advice is to discern if it’s God, coincidence, or the Devil by asking yourself a few simple questions:
- Does it go along with the ten commandments, the Bible and Jesus’ great commandment to love God with all your being and love your neighbor as yourself?
- Does it cause harm to yourself or others?
- Does it draw you closer to God?
If you can answer yes to the first and last question and no to the middle, then it is God. Next, ask God to bring someone into your life that will help you grow in your relationship with Him. Start spending time with God, talking to him, loving him and basking in his love for you, and ask him for everything you need. You will be amazed at what happens to your life. It becomes a grand adventure, the Journey of a lifetime.
